Dear friends of Model United Nations,
I am Debernardi Virginia – fondly known as Debe – and I am writing to you in the capacity of Secretary General and Conference Manager of the European Model United Nations, happening in Maastricht (The Netherlands), between the 10th and the 13th of May 2018.
Should you be an experienced MUNer, well then you are in the right place to read something more about the biggest and most prestigious Model UN conference in Europe. Should MUN not be so familiar to you, allow me to take a few steps back and try to draw a clearer picture for you. An MUN is a conference in which students typically role-play delegates to the United Nations (or other institutions) and simulate UN/EU committees. They are given a country’s viewpoint, and need to defend it during debate. This is an MUN, in the simplest terms.
500 delegates, 380 days of planning, 40 Junior staffers, 30+ nationalities, 11 years of experience, 8 secretariat members, 4 days, all this within a conference of academic excellence: EuroMUN 2018. What makes EuroMUN special are its high-quality debates, 13+ interesting simulated committees and an unforgettable cultural and social experience. Over the past decade, EuroMUN has developed to be one of the most international and successful conferences in Europe. Each year, more than 500 delegates visit the Heart of Europe, Maastricht, spend 5 days with like-minded young adults and look for the most suitable and adequate solutions to pressing issues.
Academic excellence will be mirrored in the choice of committees, topics and study guides. Chairs will be thoughtfully selected on the basis of their skills to lead a committee into academically challenging conversations. Sustainability is a big aim that the logistics team is dedicated to. MUNs tend to excessively contribute to the non-recycled waste of paper, although this seems to be in clear contradiction to the general objective of an MUN, being to educate the new generation for the sake of a better future. In fact, EuroMUN 2018 will encourage the responsible use of technology and utilize sustainable materials (as much as it is reasonably possible). Gender equality is a characteristic of the conference as a whole. Our secretariat is composed of 3 girls and 4 boys, the opening ceremony will entertain a male and a female speaker, and such topic of equality will be debated in committees. EuroMUN is working in cooperation with the Dutch public authority (Maastricht Municipality, the Minister of Defense of the Netherlands, etc.) and with the United Nations University to ensure that the simulation effectively mirrors the practices in reality. You can judge yourself, but to me it seems an experience that should not be missed out.
It is my pleasure to officially invite you to EuroMUN 2018. The 2018 edition will happen between the 10th and the 13th of May, with the delegate applications open between the 1st of November 2017 and the 31st of March 2018; in regards to Chairing applications, they will run between the 1st of August and the 1st of October 2017, for both regular committees and crisis backroom. You can stay updated though our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/EuroMUN/ and by regularly checking our website http://euromun.org/.
I am very much looking forward to seeing you all in EuroMUN 2018!
